Catherine Grier seemed to have it all—money, prestige, and a beach house that would rival the Hamptons. But an old scar buried deep in her soul hides a life filled with lonely nights and painful memories…until a dusty old book lands in her lap, sending her back in time to 1767 and into the arms of sexy Lord Bryne Adair.
A hunky history professor in a tweed jacket, a cheeky Goth chick, and a pipe-smoking, book-hurling ghost. Put them all together in an antiquated library and, well…
Professor Jack Wood’s silver-streaked hair definitely ages him, and he can thank Killer Dawn for that. He won’t be falling into the love trap again anytime real soon. But this new librarian has him curious, with her head-to-toe black Goth garb, piercings, and a defiant attitude to match. Definitely not his type of girl, but still…
Abigail Stryker’s got her work cut out for her. The last two librarians didn’t last a month before airborne books chased them off. But Abby’s determined to make her new life a go – and to stay as far away from older men as possible. Once was enough. Might be tough to do when the library’s best patron is none other than dreamy-eyed Jack Wood. And it seems the eccentric ghost may have taken a shine to her as well.
What better place to fall in love than in a haunted library? Night Owl Reviews says of Phantom Traces: “Gem has some wonderfully detailed descriptions . . .She also has created a nice selection of eccentric characters, who added a nice level of animation to the story. I was particularly drawn to the historical mystery . . . For me, that was the page turner . . .”
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Always a fan of ghost stories and romance, I found far too few authors writing books in this genre. After exhausting the choices out there by Barbara Michaels, Susanna Kearsley, and a few others, I decided it was time to write one myself.
Libraries are one of my favorite places to be, and much of how my heroine, Abby, feels about books reflects my own bibliophilism. In selecting a setting, I wanted to create a place that reflected the magic the characters would discover on their journey, and I’d lived in western North Carolina long enough to know it was the perfect place. The fictional town of Caldwell is actually fashioned after Lenoir, N.C.
Creating the library was a bit more challenging, but living in Massachusetts, I had plenty of really old buildings to visit. Over the course of several weeks before I began writing Phantom Traces, I traveled to about a half-dozen old libraries in the area. The Harvey Library is a mash-up of them all. The first two chapters of the story were actually written sitting in a secluded corner of the Richard Sugden Library in Spencer, MA.
