Abigail Preston hadn’t been able to stop thinking of him since she’d been told she’d see him again.
After a memorable high school summer romance, Abigail and Austin broke up when it came time for her to go to college. Now 21, and with nothing but bright prospects for her future ahead, Abigail finds herself conflicted over seeing her old flame again. While it was easy enough to get along with him on the surface, Abigail feels herself falling, a little too comfortably, into the old patterns that two “friends” should not fall into. However, when an accident threatens her entire future, despite Austin’s own personal struggles, she finds him to be the only constant person by her side throughout it all. Had he really changed, or was she fooling herself by falling back into a trap that she’d barely survived before? Even more, should she offer him a second chance at the love he had once passed up?
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I had originally thought that my first draft was garbage, and I hadn't clicked on it in years. One day I decided to go through some old writing and couldn't stop reading about Abi and Austin!
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I began writing this book in college when my friends and I were all awkward and desperately trying to find our way in the world. We tried so hard to do things the "right" way and wound up making more mistakes than we would if we had just followed our hearts!
“Abi?” She heard a man’s voice from behind. Turning around, only slightly startled, she saw before her Austin Higgins. He was standing in the middle of the living room staring straight back at her. He must have come in when she was deep in thought.
“Austin,” she began, but no other words would come. She stood staring at the man before her. His hair was still blond, although darker, and it was in a style that was long on top and short in the back. His sharp nose and tight jaw seemed to have grown more taunt over the years, and the creases he once had around his mouth and eyes were now grooves set permanently by mother nature. Still, he wore age well. The stubble growing around his jaw line was a perfect testament to that, as she’d never seen him with a beard in his younger years. The bristly look gave him a sex appeal that sent at least a couple of shivers into her. His eyes were still the darkest blue she’d ever seen, that is when he looked straight at you, as he was doing right now. In the past he would lock eyes only for so long before he would cast his gaze away, usually accompanied by a crooked mischievous smile, which he clearly still had. While his look had changed, it was obvious that inside he was still the same old Austin. He looked picture perfect in his long-sleeved white t-shirt paired with white cargo pants. Although his shirt was baggy on him, it was impossible not to notice the chisel of his torso beneath the shirt. That was new.
“It’s wonderful to see you again.” He said, walking toward her. He embraced her in a big hug, and immediately she was 18 years old again. Returning the hug and sliding her hands along his back, she was overwhelmed with the old familiarity and safety that was impossible not to feel in the comfort of his arms. Unconsciously she lowered her head and began turning her forehead towards his neck, something she’d always done before, nuzzling him as she used to do. Realizing she was already losing herself in him, she snapped herself back to reality.
Brooke is a tortured artist who began writing plays in the 3rd grade. After losing her muse as a teen, she struggled for years to write, but what came out on paper never aligned with what was in her heart. Finally, after being inspired by some old friends, her writing came to fruition which became her first published novel, Desperate Times, Second Chances.
Inspired by strong women who have a driven purpose and very little tolerance for bull, she enjoys exploring equality in relationships with broken characters who clearly have made past mistakes. Don't we all?
