About Leann Ryans:
I’m a wife and mother of three who’s been an avid reader since I could pick up a book. It wasn’t unusual for me to read a book a day, ignoring the real world as I was sucked into the pages of a great story.
I grew up on sci-fi and fantasy books before discovering the world of romance. PNR has always been my go-to, and omegaverse is my addiction of choice.
I love writing books featuring heroes who are a bit rough around the edges but aren’t overly cruel. My heroines aren’t always the take charge type, but neither are all women. They are comfortable in their femininity.
If you’re looking for a story that has dark themes without leaving you wanting to punch the hero in the face, mine might just be for you.
What inspires you to write?
I kept have this idea of a story, and each night I'd put myself to sleep thinking through how the story would go. I really wanted to read the story and find out what happened, but the only way to do that was to write it myself, so I did!
Most of my ideas come in the form of a scene, usually when I'm in the shower or trying to go to sleep. Some of them stick with me long enough that I finally have to write them out.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am mostly a discovery writer. I start with a scene/idea and just sit down and start writing. Since I write romance I always know the point of the story is for the two people to end up together, but their path to that point is a mystery. I don't know what's going to happen until I write it, and most of the time where I thought we were going isn't where we end up.
I sit down and write each morning once everyone is settled. With three dogs and three kids that is usually an hour or two after I've dragged myself out of bed, then I spend about an hour on admin tasks before I get to the real writing. I do that till lunch and then spend the rest of the day taking care of the house and kids.
How do you develop your characters?
My characters usually come to me mostly formed. NaNoWriMo has a character questionnaire that I love and sometimes I'll use that to flesh them out a little if I'm thinking through a story, but I let them take the lead when I write. I don't know their journey until I write it.
What authors inspire you?
Growing up Anne McCaffery and Mercedes Lackey were my favorite. My love of sci-fi and fantasy naturally led me to PNR, and once I found omegaverse I was addicted. Addison Cain is one of the best know authors for that trope along with Nora Ash, and now there are many more making names for themselves and I couldn't be more happy to see the new variety.
How do you keep going in the midst of distractions?
I had a toddler when I first started writing. From the beginning I wrote in tiny snatches of time while she was distracted. Now that she's a little older and we have a routine life is so much easier, but I still have regular distractions, they're just less demanding. When I'm caught up in the flow of the story all I want to do is write so it's easy to ignore minor things or jump right back in if I'm forced to step away.
What are your hobbies when you need a break from writing?
Reading. I've always been an avid reader and I continue to make time to read each day. The kids take up the rest of my time.
