About Britney M. Mills:
By day, Britney M. Mills is the wife to a builder and mom to five, but by night, she turns into an author, writing YA & contemporary romance stories.
A book lover, former college athlete, and Jane Austen fan, she crafts stories with the idea that anyone can find love.
When she's not writing, she spends time playing games with her kids, or shuttling them to and from their activities, watching Sanditon and Murdock Mysteries, or dreaming of future characters while she folds a mountain of laundry.
What inspires you to write?
I love crafting stories. I've always loved writing, but it wasn't until after I was married that I realized the value of writing. It's a creative outlet for me and when I take time to write, I feel a little more whole when it comes to the other aspects of life, i.e. being a wife and mother.
I also love giving people an escape from the daily grind, even if just a few hours.
Tell us about your writing process.
I wish I could say that I had my process streamlined. I always feel like I've got the process down and then the next book comes in and disrupts it all :).
I do a mixture of plotting and pantsing, usually figuring out at least until the midway point what's going to happen. Then I go back and edit and reread that section to make sure I get all the details right for the rest of the story. That first section usually helps me learn more about the characters so I can push and pull them where I need to toward the end.
How do you develop your characters?
I don't get full conversations about characters, but I get snippets of their life as I do normal, every day things. We were recently on vacation and I thought of a future character having a job in a hotel based on watching a woman where we stayed. I try to come up with some of the basics beforehand about each character, but usually don't get deeper until the story is underway.
What authors inspire you?
I have many author friends who inspire me to keep reaching higher. Elana Johnson is up there on that list, as well as Stephanie Garber, Sarah J. Maas, etc.
How do you keep going in the midst of distractions?
Well, I have 5 children, so there are plenty of those! I make sure to use the time I have doing book things. I usually have to set a deadline for myself and even if I'm off by a few days, that helps urge me on better than having nothing pressing for me.
What are your hobbies when you need a break from writing?
Reading, hiking, playing sports, playing board games and card games.
What romance genres do you write?: Sweet Contemporary Romance & YA Contemporary Romance (Baseball)
Do you write in genres that are not romance related?
Urban fantasy, but it has a minor romance element to it.
What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Audiobook
