About Becky Flade:
A city girl, born and bred, I set my stories in and around southeast Pennsylvania, or at least have a character or two from the area. I wrote my first book in kindergarten and even then, my style leaned toward suspense. In addition to being a mother and grandmother, I work as a legal professional when I'm not writing, reading, or dancing. And I am proud to tell people I make my own dreams come true…one happily ever after at a time.
What inspires you to write?
Almost anything and everything can inspire a story. In fact, my dad's dog inspired a short story about a werewolf and a reporter that grew into my first full-length book and spawned an entire romantic suspense series.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is rather scattered. I normally start, very seat of the pants, pretty much following where the characters take me. But if/when I get stuck on what happens next – and it happens – I prepare an outline and a cast sheet of who's who. That usually gets me back on track and it's handy when it's time to write the synopsis.
How do you develop your characters?
I believe I write unique character-driven fiction and since they are driving the car, I'm often only along for the ride. I create photo files of how I picture them – which I often share on social media. Sometimes I create character profiles for the main characters, as well as a list of supporting characters, just to keep things straight, especially while writing a series.
What authors inspire you?
I adore Nora Roberts/JD Robb, Tami Hoag, Patricia Cornwell, Jeffrey Archer, and Agatha Christie.
How do you keep going in the midst of distractions?
I have two daughters, one married and one dating, two grandsons, plus a bonus kid, and a cat who doesn't know he's a cat. Distractions are a way of life for me. The best way I've found to block them out is to put on headphones and crank up the music. And the music I choose is always determined by the tone of the book. Fated Souls was loud thrumming rock. Fated Hearts I wrote to old school Motown. Sometimes I share those soundtracks on YouTube.
What are your hobbies when you need a break from writing?
Like I think all writers do, when I need a break I read a book. Or I binge watch Harry Potter , Star Wars, and/or The Avengers MCU. I crochet, I bake, and I love to dance. When I come up for air after a writing spree, I clean my house.
