About Gretchen Jeannette:
Gretchen Jeannette lives and works in Chester County, Pennsylvania, an area rich in Revolutionary War and Colonial American history. Her enduring interest in 18th Century America began at a young age, inspired by tales of adventure, romance, and local lore. After working as an editor for a publishing company, she decided to write a story of her own. So began a journey fueled by her passion for breathing life into history through believable characters, authentic historical details, and plots woven with adventure, romance, and suspense.
What inspires you to write?
My inspiration often comes from reading the well-crafted works of other authors. I have a particular interest in American historical fiction. Growing up, I discovered the novels of Dale Van Every and Allan Eckert, whose timeless tales of adventure, romance, and action capture the essence of early American lore.
Tell us about your writing process.
For the most part, I develop an outline for a story in my head, although sometimes I'll write a sketchy outline and then fill in the details as the story evolves. Many times a storyline will write itself in a character-driven plot, as the characters become more and more developed and assert their individual "voices".
How do you develop your characters?
A character will often "speak" to me as I put myself in his or her place. While I do give each of my characters unique behaviorial traits, I also allow them to take on a life of their own. We all share a general human nature, but our behavior as individuals can be unpredictable, and so should a character be. Surprising behaviors help build intrigue around a persona and keep a reader guessing as to what that character might do next. At the same time, I think it's important to ensure that the actions, behaviors, and feelings of each character ring true and help further the plot.

Bernard Cornwell
Diana Gabaldon
Dale Van Every
