About Sarah L Campbell:
After completing a variety of roles including working in libraries, the theatre and even training to be a teacher, I settled on writing in my early thirties. I decided that self-publishing was the right route for me and set about writing my first ever story, a children's book about a muddled fairy. Since then, I've self-published 4 more children's stories and a teenage novel. I have written two books so far in the Leaves of Change Café Series, all contemporary romances. I live in the northeast of England with my family and our beloved cat Louie. I can usually be found writing with a cat on my knee and lots of cups of tea!

What inspires you to write?
It can be anything from an interesting object to a season. For instance, I decided to write some Christmas stories and out of that came Christmas at the Leaves of Change Café. I don’t always know where the inspiration comes from, sometimes I think of a character and know I have to write their story!

Tell us about your writing process.
I often make notes on a character and a story before moving on to writing a rough draft out in a notebook. The next stage is to type it up, print it out and go through it with a pen. In the early stages of writing my book, I often add or delete a chapter and then in the more later stages I line edit my book. The spelling and grammar are always the last part of the writing process.
I try to write every afternoon as I find this the best time to write. I'll usually write at my desk or the garden(if the weather is nice). Before I start writing, I'll often put on some feel good pop music to get me in the mood to write.

How do you develop your characters?
I don’t know how the characters will develop before I start writing. I go on a journey with my characters through the writing and editing process to find out how they should develop.
Sometimes my characters will just start talking to me – usually as I’m drifting off to sleep, so it’s a good idea for me to have a notebook by the bed. When I am writing a scene or chapter it’s like I am in the room with my characters and listening to their conversations.

What authors inspire you?
There are many authors that influence my romance writing from Jane Austen and the Bronte’s to Danielle Steel and Carole Matthews.

How do you keep going in the midst of distractions?
I plan daily time for writing and try to limit looking on social media during this time. Otherwise I’ll spend all my time scrolling through my news feed and replying to comments.
There will always be distractions whether it’s the phone going or being called away from the writing desk by something, even the cat demanding attention. I think as a writer, you just have to accept these distractions as part of life and go back to your writing when they’re dealt with.

What are your hobbies when you need a break from writing?
My main hobby is definitely reading, I have a stack of books and loads more on my kindle. I also write book reviews on my blog. When I am not reading, I love spending time relaxing in the garden or visiting a historic property or museum.

What romance genres do you write?: I write in contemporary romance.

Do you write in genres that are not romance related?
Before I started writing romance, I wrote three children’s fairy stories, a middle grade story about a witch and her magical cats and a teenage time travel story where a young girl travels back to the Victorian era.
