About Emem Uko:
Emem Uko, whose first name means "peace" in Annang, a dialect of Akwa Ibom, Nigeria, was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Emem developed a love for storybooks and writing at an early age and blames it on her parents' decision to buy her books instead of candy. During her master's program, Emem began a blog, Z and S, as a hobby and as a way to clear her head from the stress of school life. She started writing her first book without plans to publish it. Thanks to a nosey friend, Emem ended up publishing her first Young Adult (YA) novel. She has published several fictional books ranging from YA to contemporary romance and doesn't have plans to stop anytime soon.
What inspires you to write?
I'm inspired by the everyday people and the happenings in their lives. Sometimes, my observations on a train ride are enough to get inspired and write a juicy story.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually have the main character figured out before I create my outline. The character is the "dot" that starts the line and the branches that spread out. I outline on papers that I paste on my wall. I guess I should get a whiteboard. I used to have target word counts, but these days I just go with the flow. It makes my writing flow naturally.
How do you develop your characters?
I usually know the journey of the main character, but sometimes, other characters influence the story and things usually change. I find that I end up liking the new unfoldment as opposed to what I originally pictured.
What authors inspire you?
I'm a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon
How do you keep going in the midst of distractions?
