Romance Hideaway

About Vidisha Chandna Dua:
Ever since I can remember, I have been a daydreamer. I love to travel, try different cuisines, dance, listen to music and, most of all, I love to read. Since my priority was to earn and live independently, I became a Chartered Accountant. For eleven years, I worked, traveled, made friends, and loved every part of it.
I grew up in India and U.A.E. For higher studies, I left my parent's home and went to another city within India. Living independently made me realize how much I enjoyed travelling, meeting people, learning about different cultures, cuisines, and fashion. After completing my studies, I worked in India, Australia, and U.A.E, lived in Norway and traveled whenever I got the chance. It gave me an understanding of how cultures around the world differ and where the similarities lie. This has greatly influenced my writing.
My Love for writing has also been influenced by my passion for reading. Every summer holidays, my parents would take us to a bookstore to buy as many books as we could carry. I could not get enough of fiction novels and would re-create them in different scenarios. I started writing when I was in school and continued till I was in college. It was mostly about how my day went, people I met and life's varied stories. It took a long time for me to write a book because storytelling requires dedicated time and planning to articulate that I could not spare. I made five-year plans for what I needed to achieve. If it was not in the plan, it was not meant to be.
Those five-year plans went out the window once my daughter was born and I took a break from work. Every day was busier than the next. That is when I started thinking about my life, people I had met over the years, places I have been to, and life’s many surprises.
I remember, once my daughter asked me there were so many different things she wanted to do in life and whether she would be able to do them all or will she have to choose? I told her if she worked smart and hard, she can do them all. That conversation stayed with me. Then one day I took my daughter for her first dance class and had an hour to spare. The conversation with my daughter came back and I thought to give writing a try since that was something I always wanted to do. I started making notes on my phone and in a couple of weeks, it became my first Novella ‘Life’s Not Over Yet’. It is true that sometimes life happens even when you are not looking.

What inspires you to write?
I am inspired everyday by my surroundings. Ever since I can remember I have been day dreaming about 'what if' scenarios in my head for everyday happenings. The idea that every decision that a person makes affects so many other people that are connected to that person has always intrigued me.

Tell us about your writing process.
I write by listening and talking to my characters in my head. Whenever I get an idea about a story line, the first thing that comes to my mind is one of the characters. That character starts a conversation with me and slowly other characters come to life interacting with each other. As the story line grows, it becomes like a movie where I can picture each and every scene. That is when I start writing and, in a week, or two I can clearly see how I want it to end. It isn't always easy to write everyday as my life is busier now than when I used to work. There is always distractions. To ensure that I write everyday even if it's just a few lines I write when everyone's gone to sleep. That way I fall asleep dreaming about my story line.

How do you develop your characters?
First my characters develops and talk to me. They interact with each other based on an idea that I have. Once I understand where the story is going I start writing. I have had to change story line as the characters would change suddenly but it didn't stop me for writing instead it just made me want to write more to find out what happens in the end.

Who are your favorite authors?
L.M. Montgomery is one of my favorite author. Even though I am a big fan of mystery novels, I made sure I read the entire 'Anne of Green Gables Collection'. I love reading Agatha Christie, John Grisham, Robert Ludlum, Jeffery Archer's books. Ayn Rand's 'Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged' are two of my favorite books
