Romance Author Interview – Colin Guest

About Colin Guest:
Colin Guest (1940-2017) Born in England. He became an expat worker in 1983 and in 1988 obtained a contract down on the Turkish Mediterranean Coast. Here he and his late wife had a house built and moved to live there from their home in England. After her death in 2007, Colin later married a Turkish lady and now lives in Istanbul. Colin’s first book, An Expats Experiences of Living in Turkey, covers his living in Turkey for over 30 years. His second Follow in the Tigerman's Footsteps is intended to help readers discover that there is more to life than a tedious 9-5 job. Although a memoir, it reads more like an adventure story, with Colin living a life most only dream. Since then, Colin has had the following books published.
Terror Holiday, For the Greater Good, Impending Disaster and Fatal Love. Desperation Rules the Day is the first of a trilogy of published books re a planned terrorist attack on America. The second is Never Pull the Tiger’s Tail, with Colin now in the process of writing the sequel. He has recently completed the manuscript for Suzy’s Dilemma, which like A Dangerous Love Affair and Fatal love is a romance story mixed with erotica. Seven of Colin's books are available as audiobooks via Amazon ACX with one more due for completion shortly. Due to Colin’s deep concern about nature and the environment, he supports several organisations. These include Sea Shepherd and Care for the Wild/Born Free. From the latter, Colin has adopted a tiger for the past ten years. He worked as a volunteer at Wildlife Rescue/Rehabilitation centres in South Africa and Thailand and recommends animal lovers try this as a way of giving something back to nature.

What inspires you to write?
I have always been interested in writing since I was in school. Now that I am retired I have more time to follow my dream.

Tell us about your writing process.
I am a seat of my pants writer, I just think of a story and start to write. I try and portray my characters as near real-life as possible, and research details of locations that I use in my books.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters come alive as I write. I do not base them on real characters.

About May J. Panayi:
My name is May J. Panayi and I’m 57. I have been a writer since I was a kid. Okay not anything earth shattering; just a poem in the local paper at age five, then a newsletter to the neighborhood age ten. I hobby wrote poems and short stories throughout my teens and early twenties, then various magazine submissions, and a lot of activity in the underground fanzine scene of the eighties; contributing to others as well as producing my own. I started writing books around 2000, and currently have fourteen titles published. I moved onto just writing fiction novels with the occasional short story collection. I became a full time self employed writer in 2014. It's been an interesting journey so far and one I hope will long continue. I write across a variety of genres, my friends call me the eclectic indie. My Sun series, in which there are two novels so far, a third coming this year to complete the trilogy, is my most popular style. It is travel romance/mystery; bit hard to categorize.

What inspires you to write?
I’ve always written, ever since I was a little kid; poems, diaries, magazines, articles, short stories, non fiction and then finally, full length novels. Even when I take time off to travel, I always take a note book so I can write travel blog notes, or other musings. Sometimes I even get story ideas when I’m traveling. My best selling Sun series, was inspired by travel to Greece and finding long lost family in Cyprus.

Tell us about your writing process.
I write the outline of each book in a notebook, then sit and flesh it out on my laptop typing incredibly fast considering I only ever use two fingers. Some things change as the novel progresses, but most of it is already in the outline. For the Sun series, I used a map of the island, with markers where the characters lived, who they are related to, their jobs, cats etc, so I could keep track of everything. I aim to write 2000 words a day, but not every day hits that target, and some days I just need to wander round the house doing mindless cleaning jobs and thinking about the characters; letting them develop in my head.

How do you develop your characters?
Sometimes they are very noisy, like real Greeks, all shouting loudest to be heard, coming forward with sweet food offerings, tempting me into their homes!

Who are your favorite authors?
My favorites are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, J.G. Ballard, Karin Slaughter, Joanne Harris, and recently discovered, Jodi Picoult, who is an amazing writer.

What genres do you write?: Romance

What inspires you to write?
Getting out and living life is one of the best ways to be inspired with ideas. They’re always floating around me waiting to be plucked. Some of the best ideas happen when you’re not looking for them. And, the experience of doing can inform the writing and make it stronger.

Tell us about your writing process.
I can pretty much work anywhere. Not because I’ve wanted to over the years, but because I had to learn to—waiting rooms, parking lots, airports, hotels. I even fished a book in the passenger seat of a car while driving halfway across the country. It wasn’t a fun 10 hours for the driver. Lucky for me, he still married me.

How do you develop your characters?
For characters, I start with their history, names, and personality quirks. Once I know that, I know what kind of adult they are and how they might react to the situations I put them in. Physical attributes are always the last thing I think about.

It's important to know more about the character than will ever be on paper. Stay true to the characters and your world building. If you know them, and respect who/what they are and where the characters come from, the story will unfold for itself.

Who are your favorite authors?
I always have to list Mandy M. Roth’s Immortal Ops series. I read the first one 15 years ago and loved it. We both published our first books together and have been besties almost from the start of our careers. I love getting sneak peeks from her Ops worlds, including the spin off series. It’s like a behind the scenes look each time she writes one.

Another great author include Kristen Painter, who I had the pleasure of working with on The Happily Everlasting Series project. Kristen has the Nocturne Falls series. Jana DeLeon was also on that project. Gena Showalter is an amazing author and human. There are so many, I can't list them all…

About Daniela R. Lovejoy:
Born and living in the Northwest near beautiful nature with both forest and coast with in walking distance, Daniela likes to wander in those surroundings when the weather allows it. She enjoys the fresh air, and it gives her mind space to let new ideas flow.

What inspires you to write?
I have a vivid imagination that comes up with stories and ideas at all times of day, it can be while out for a walk or when making breakfast. The inspiration can come from just about anything, for example, it was a piece of news about the progress in DNA knowledge about unborn children and the information parents can get before their child is born that gave me the idea for the advanced DNA technology that would transform my main character from male to female in my book.

Tell us about your writing process.
For my first book, I’d the idea and plot line. Where I wanted it to start, what to happen as main points and how it should end. Then I created the characters that fitted into that structure, gave them traits that fitted to the choices they would have to make, trying to make them engaging for the readers and their actions logical for their situation. Then I started the actual writing of the book, knowing my characters and main plot points helped to pave the road towards them, creating dialog, and surroundings to help the story move towards and through those points. I make digital notes for ideas and plot, and then write mostly at my computer, sometimes it goes fast and other times it can move more slowly but that I think is fairly common for many writers.

How do you develop your characters?
For my first book, I knew and developed my characters in advance before writing because I'd a clear plot defined from the start. I then tried to put myself in their situation with their personality in mind and write the dialog based on that. But for my second book, which I write on now the end of the story is not defined yet and I see three possible outcomes so there I let the character have more space to evolve into a different path than I perhaps had expected when I began in order to end up with the best story.

Who are your favorite authors?
Oh that was a tough one. There is so many when think about it and even more I'd forget probably so I think I better name none and not forget any either then.

What inspires you to write?
Story is how people make meaning in their lives and helps us connect with others. I think, like many writers, I am inspired to write so I can capture the stories that float around in my head and put them down on paper or screen so there is room for new ones. I also love words and how, if they are put together in the right order, they can connect with readers whom I have never met. I hope that maybe, just maybe, one of my stories will connect with someone and leave someone a little happier, or they will think of something a little differently after they close the book.

Tell us about your writing process.
My process seems to change depending upon the book I am writing. Often I start with a short story and then I add to it, growing it organically until I have a longer story. I am now trying my hand at outlining. I will have to let you know how that goes when I finish my next few books. As to how often I write? Not often enough. But I am making it more of a priority every day.

How do you develop your characters?
Yes, I think that characters do talk to me. They don't start that way but after I put them on paper and move them around a bit they begin to tell me what I need to know next.

Who are your favorite authors?
I like to read books in several genres. Some of my favorite authors in contemporary romance are Lisa Kleypas, Debbie Macomber, Barbara Delinsky. I also read a lot of Canadian literature, non-fiction, and general fiction.

What inspires you to write?
I have a persistent muse pushing me to write. Writing is like breathing to me. I love creating characters and bringing them to life.

Tell us about your writing process.
I'm a seat-of-the-pants writer. My stories are character driven, so I start with my main characters and plot by asking myself a lot of "what if" questions. It's actually very effective. I write every day, but I don't write for a specific word count. My muse controls how many words I get out. I listen to music to get motivated. My favorite kind of music is Icelandic Metal, rock/alternative, and Celtic music. A cup of coffee helps motivate me, too. I usually write in bed with my laptop.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters decide where the story is going to go, and the plot can change depending on character motivation. I hear bits of dialogue in my head, which can be annoying, especially when I'm trying to sleep. If I don't get up and write it down, I will forget everything by morning.

Who are your favorite authors?
Morgan Llywelyn, Ann Rice, Stephen King, Lynn Kurland, Mary Stewart, Evangeline Walton, Kate Horsley.

About M.D. Stewart:
I was born and raised in southern West Virginia to parents who are still happily married after fifty-five years. I'm the only girl and middle child, so I grew up using my imagination instead of playing with toy cars with my brothers. I even had an imaginary friend named Carroty, and we would sit outside on the swing and put on variety shows and sing popular songs from the time.
My dad gave me an appreciation for science fiction (proud Trekkie), and my mom gave me the love of reading with her large collection of Harlequin Romance books. I've combined the two and created my own Universe. Romance gives us all an escape to a world where there's always a happy ending. I think we need that.
I always wanted to be a published author, and thanks to my husband, I can say that I am! He fills my days with romance and never-ending support. I dedicate each book to him, because I know he's made it possible to spend my days writing, reading and promoting my books. I want to become successful enough to use my money to pay for my chosen profession.
My husband and I have a cat and a fat beagle named Lady who fights with my laptop for attention. When we aren't canning veggies from our garden, we're taking care of our five chickens.

What inspires you to write?
I grew up reading and loving it. I can still get lost in a good book and not hear a thing going on around me. I want to do that for others; give them an escape from the real world for just a little while.
My first book, Mine, was written because I loved watching the Sci-Fi show "The Legends of Tomorrow" and I wondered what would happen if Mick Rory's character fell in love with a sweet, kind woman. His character is so misunderstood, and I always felt sorry for him. Anyway, the character in my book, Mace Adams is Mick Rory in my world. Hardened shell on the outside, but with the right woman to break through, he begins to grow beyond his self-imposed boundaries.

Tell us about your writing process.
I am a strictly see-what's-in-my-head-and-type-it-out seat of the pants writer. Many times I have no idea what's going to happen until it happens. When I get on a good writing roll, I'll go back and read it later and be surprised by what I've written.
Just recently I've decided that I had so many characters that I needed to keep track of them and bought a five-subject notebook to keep notes on each series. I write the Main Characters of each book in the appropriate series section, give small details about their looks, family and strange quirks each has. I have some crossovers, and I didn't want to have a reader say "Hey, in that other book, she had brown eyes, but now they're blue?". I realized I spelled a character's name in a book twenty-five times ending with "or" and twenty-seven times with "er." I couldn't have that! I notice things like that when I'm reading, and I'm sure others notice too.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters are my family. I know that might seem strange, but they spend so much time taking up headspace that I know them. I do get to watch them grow and evolve as the book grows and different characters influence them. Sometimes I've written a character (namely, General Elio Vargas) that isn't so nice, but then as I write more about them, I learn why or that they're misunderstood.
And like the character I mentioned before, Mace Adams, I was so surprised to see how much he's changed from the beginning of the story to "now." When I go back and read that book, I see just how much he needed love. I'm glad he got that love too!

Who are your favorite authors?
Wow, so many authors have become my favorites. I have every single book by Laurann Dohner. I stumbled onto Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" by accident, and she was the first author I ever communicated with by email back in the 90s (I have printouts of our emails, I'm such a geek). That was back when her latest release was "Drums of Autumn." My first eBook purchase was J.R. Rain's "Moon Dance." I ate up his work as fast as he could put it out. Of course J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series too! Mr. Rain and Ms. Rowling are the reason I used my initials on my books. I’ve recently started reading Lucy Lennox and Rosalind Abel’s works as well.

About Kayla Krantz:
Proud author of a number of fantasy and thrillers, fascinated by the dark and macabre. Stephen King is her all time inspiration mixed in with a little bit of Eminem. When she began writing, she started in horror but it somehow drifted into thriller. She loves the 1988 movie Heathers. She was born and raised in Michigan but traveled across the country to where she currently resides in Texas.

What inspires you to write?
I draw my inspiration from a number of sources including music, pictures, and dreams. I think the number one way that I gain inspiration is by seeing pictures on various social media accounts. It doesn't really matter what the content of the pictures are. If they're striking enough, my brain tries to create a backstory for them and sometimes that develops into an entire novel.

Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is actually quite complicated. When I begin a new project, I first write it all down in a spiral college-ruled notebook with a fountain pen. Pen on paper helps me gather my thoughts better than writing on a computer. After I finish my first draft in the notebook, I transfer all the writing to loose-leaf paper that I keep in a binder. After this draft is when I finally type it on the computer and look for things such as plot holes or areas where characters need development.

How do you develop your characters?
My characters almost always have something to say. When I start a story, I try to have an idea of how I want my characters to be, but they end up deciding their own personalities as the plot goes on. At first, it was frustrating, but I'm learning that the characters finding their own way makes my writing better, easier, because I'm not forcing them to sound a way that doesn't work.

Who are your favorite authors?
This is a tough question. I've expanded my reading horizons, and I adore so many authors. I'll give my top six: Stephen King, Lynn Weingarten, Caroline Kepnes, Ruth Ware, Mary Kubica, and Kevin O'Brien.

These authors all have a handful of wonderful books, however, I will single out Lynn Weingarten because her book "Bad Girls with Perfect Faces" is my absolute favorite book. I must've listened to the audio version 100+ times.

C. S. What inspires you to write?
Socrates said that the unexamined life was not worth living, so I like to think a lot of my inspiration comes from examining different things about my life — things I like, things I hate, things I like to make fun of, things I hate to deal with. I mostly write to understand things, or to try to help others understand, and maybe a lot of it also comes from wanting to be understood.

Tell us about your writing process.
I write a lot by taking the questions and ideas I have putting them down into outlines, and then I start to write. A lot of where I like to start is with a character, but sometimes they are not always eager to come. For Kingdom of Ash and Soot, my historical coming of age novel based on Cinderella and a little bit of Mission Impossible, Eleanora did not show up right away and introduce herself, but I followed her shadow around inside my mind for awhile. I think I earned her trust that way!

How do you develop your characters?
Some characters are surprising, but since I don't like surprises, it doesn't happen very often. Usually when I am not sure about a character, it is only a matter of degree. For example, I know who my villains are pretty quickly, but it is another question to ask how far are they willing to go to condemn themselves?

Who are your favorite authors?
I write in a variety of genres, and I have a large collection of strange authors myself. I adore C. S. Lewis and Samuel Johnson, I've enjoyed what I've read of Tolstoy and Tolkien; I like Amy Tan's central journey for womanhood, motherhood, and daughterhood; I like a lot of Nora Robert's takes on romance and what true love really means and really requires; there are magical quirks to J K Rowling's work and I like the deep thoughtfulness that comes from Andrew Klavan's characters as they wrestle with the conflicts they face.

Romance Author Interview – Ariella Talix

About Ariella Talix:
I've chosen to write under a pseudonym in order to protect the dignity of those whom I love. Ariella Talix evolved as my alter-ego when I became inspired to write novels that are erotic in nature. It's great fun to write the books, though I sometimes feel a little bit like the Great Oz hiding behind a curtain.

I am a regular wife and mother who lives in the Midwest. Many of my characters also choose the Midwestern lifestyle over a more exotic or sophisticated locale. I haven't always lived here, having grown up in southern California and living for a while in Europe. But I love it here.

My earliest goal in life was to become a writer, but I was sidetracked in college when I decided I didn't like the courses that were offered, so I became an artist instead- my other great love. For many years I have pursued that career in various ways. Again, I have used that experience in my books because it's fun (and smart) to write about what you know. Artists of all sorts show up in the books. They make for wonderfully colorful people!

What inspires you to write?
I've always loved a good romance story. In the past several years, the trend has shifted to some pretty hot material, and I thought reading it was a lot of fun. Then one night, I had an epiphany that set in motion my own debut novel, Make Believe. The plot changed around a bit from that first brainstorm, but the backbone was there. I just sat down and started writing and writing.

For anyone who's read Make Believe, the two scenes that smacked me in the head and told me to write the book were the scene in the bar and the wedding scene. From those two ideas, I created the rest of the book. The books after that have been a sequel and a spin-off with more coming.

I also love to include pets in the books, so animals are important characters in each story.

And lastly, creativity is something I adore. It floors me to see artistic talent, writing talent, musical, acting, etc. Future books will definitely continue to explore creative people's stories.

Tell us about your writing process.
I am definitely a "pantser" when I write. I may mull things over in my head a lot, but when I sit down at the computer, it's almost like taking dictation. The words sometimes almost surprise me. The most fun of all to me is writing a conversation. It's important to make the dialogue fit the characters, and they are such real people in my head, I can hear them talking. (I hope that doesn't sound too weird!)

I have had to learn, however, that even though something may be well written, it doesn't always advance the plot or belong in the book. So… poof! Entire pages disappear into nothing, and I rewrite a better scene. It stings a tiny bit, but it's worth it, in the long run, to be realistic that not all words belong just because I've written them.

I've been known to set down an outline only when I need to figure out a timeline and people's ages. The rest of the time, I can't be bothered. At first, I'd jot down ideas in a small file, but I'd forget to look at it for ages, and when I'd go back finally and read them, the book had gone in a completely different direction anyway. So now that just seems like extra work.

I tend to write all over the house- usually with the "help" of a dog at my side.

How do you develop your characters?
I don't really know at first except in the vaguest of terms. I like to develop a relationship with the characters the same way a reader would as the story advances. The exception to this would probably be David Drummond in the second book, The Designer. His story just grabbed my heart from the get-go as I imagined him learning about his true background and finally achieving acceptance for his incredible talents.

My characters are definitely noisy in my head when they are helping me out.

Who are your favorite authors?
Oh, so many! L.H. Cosway, Penny Reid, Penelope Ward, Charlotte Stein, Tiffany Reisz, Karen Marie Moning, Christina Lauren, Jodie Ellen Malpas, Anna James Watson. There are several others, but this list represents the authors whose work I find the most reliably entertaining.
